They greedily coagulate,
Eagerly clump together.
The lone wolves prowl and pick off stragglers.
Those with sharp elbows and sharp tongues join the biggest feast
They are all ravenous:
Half in the conversation
They eyeball the next meal
Over my shoulder;
Their teeth, still in it.

Tasted, consumed, ejected from the ruck
I spot a break in the hunched backs
And asking if I might partake,
Might have a nibble,
Skin in the game,
Just one bite,
I’m hungry too -
They scamper away.

I am introduced to another scrap of a soul
Who longs for proper food
Undernourished by the canapé of me.
